NOTES AND COMMENTS

TBr Glßncob.l . Owners are reminded that accept-' ances for the first day's handicaps at the Manawatu meeting are due tonight, at 10 o'clock. v F ii la J, Pf vments for the Palmerston ;Korth Stakes are duo at the same time. To-morrow, at 9 p.m., nominations will close for all handicaps to be run at the Wellington' Racing Club's Summer Meeting. Acceptances' for the Hawke's Bay, Taratahi, and Marton meetings are due on Friday next. ';"'.. Epworth is galloping very well at Feildmg,. and he promises to be one of tne well-fancied division for the Electric Handicap at Woodville, in which he will be. ridden by the. Fordell light "■•eight, H Young. The Woodville Jockey Club's Summer Meeting will be held on Wednesday and Thursday. .Big fields are engaged in all the events. . , !

Trojan, who has been responsible, for some good work over fences at Hastings, will make:his initial appearance in a hurdle race at Woodville to-nior-row, when he will be ridden by J. O'Connell. ■ It is said that this horseman got off Glen Nevis to ride Trojan. The Awapuni trainer, Thos. Wilson, has been'seriously ill of late, and is contemplating a sea trip. He is giving up training,- and will sell his horses during tho progress of the Woodville meeting. , Evadne has been galloping freely on the Hastings tracks, and Mr. P. P. Neagle's filly may bo one of the favourites for the Electric Handicap at Woodville ..to-morrow. ... F. Davis left Napier for Auckland yesterday. He took with him a team of seven horses, consisting of the Cup candidate, Marshal Macdonald, Balboa, the C.J.C. Derby winner, and Desert Gold, who will contest the Foal Stakes and Royal Stakes. Tete-a-tete will do battle for Mr. T. H. Lowry in the Railway Handicap, and Marco Belle will contest the minor 'event's," while Beldame, and Camp'eador will race in the handicaps. Trainers J. W. Lowe (four), J. W. Scott (three), C. Pritchard (three), N. Williams (five), A. Webster (one), F. Carmont (three), and: F. Higgott (three) are leaving for Woodirille with their teams to-day. ■ The Riccarton trainers, H. Cutts and G. M. Aynsley, will arrive from the south this morning, >and will go on to Ellorslie by the Main Trunk express co-night. Jockey C. Emerson is also aboard the' Maori, but he will do the Woodville meeting before going on to Ellerslie. The Achilles mare Margarita, purchased by Mr. H: Hodge after winning tho selling race at the New Zealand Cup meeting, has been nominated for a number of hack events at the holiday meetings, for which she is ineligible to compete,. The stake won at Riccarton was worth £150 to the'winner, and tliis debars the mare from again starting in i;he hack races. The heavy rain which fell at Trentham on Sunday night will have a most beneficial effect on the race "tracks, which wore getting on the hard side.

Mr. P. Soames's Ladoga, who .is to contest the Manawatu Cup, was responsible for a very taking gallop over seven furlongs at Trentham on Saturday .morning. Considering that he will bo making his first appearance this season when, lie steps out for the twelvefurlongs event, his chances of success do not appear too rosy, for no matter how well a horse works on the tracks a race or two is generally required to sharpen him. up before success can be anticipated over a long course. French Rose, the half-sister to Signor. is now trained by the ex-New Zealander. J. Whitworth, at Eandwick. At Mentone (Vic.) on Dccomber 5, a well-known cross-contry rider, B. J. Casey, was killed through his mount Poonah falling in the rush Steeple. The victory of the' King's horse Friar Marcus in tho Middle Park Plate recently gave rise to an outburst of enthusiastic cheering such as had seldom been seon on an English racecourse. •Tho Traquair horso Athenic who returned from New Zealand last week has already resumed work at Randwick, and H. Rayner is very hopeful that he will go on all right (says the Sydney "Referee"). Tho joint that brought about his retirement is now so very littlo different in appearance from that of the other fore-leg that it would be difficult to tell thero had ever been anything wrong with it. Athenic, who has grown during his absence, has not started- since he won the Carrington Stakes in December of last year. On that occasion- he carried 7st. 131b., the other places being filled by Manchester list. 21b.. and Lord Liddoll 7st. 61b. J. M'Grcgor, tho steeplechaser rider, who was so severely hurt last June, has so far progressed that how .as able to visit tho Caulfield tracks on Saturday morning, and without his crutches, but aided by a stick (says a Melbourne writer). The steel plate attached to bis broken lef, which would not knit at: tho time of its being set, has now been removed, and M'Grogor hopes to bn able to rcsumo riding in the near future.
