'A most enthusiastic meeting was held on Saturday night in aid of the recruiting movement: The Opera House was crowded, and thousands waited on the road outside... The programme consisted of patriotic songs and speeches inside the building, which were repeated to the thousands outside who were unable to gain admission. Captain Goldingham' presided, and Mr. D. Buick, M.P., made a great patriotio speech, in which he stated that it was far better to send young men to the front, and if that was not sufficient, "then us ojd fellows would have to join the firing-lino." He said he was annoyed when he read the remarks of local Farmers' Union members that it was nn inconvenient time to spare their boys because they had cows to milk or some other excuse. "Send the boys," said' Mr. Buick. "The women -will do the milking, if necessary, and it won't do them much harm." Fifty-five recruits volunteered. .
