"AVENGED"

VICE-ADMIRAL STURDEE ! AND HIS FLEET CONGRATULATED. The local branch of the Navy League has sent the following letter to Marshall, R.N., H.M.S. Psyche, the.-' senior naval officer in, New waters: — '

"Dear Sir—On behalf of the' localexecutive, we. should like to. convey tbs league's warmest congratulations upon, the brilliant success just achieved byj Admiral Sturdee and his 'Squadron: The tragic ending of the Good Hope and the Monmouth, which wo all felt so keenly, is now avenged; and the risks to our oversea commerce are vast* lv reduced. As a result of this action,nn increased number of British ships will presumably be set free to assist in, the main purpose of the silent Fleet,i.e., the bottling up of the enemy in its own ports—a work in which we feel proud the Dominion's gift ship is taking its part. But for this close blockade, wo realise that instead of merely, six or seven, there would have been hundreds of German war craft and armed merchantmen at large'all over the world, and our oversea commerce; would have been entirely held up, in-i, stead of which our trade is, tively speaking, free from . molesta* tion. 'i "We aTe. dear sir, yours faithfully, (Signed) "J. B. HARCOTJRT, Chair* man, Wellington Branch of thq Navy League. (Signed) "CECIL W. PALMER, "Hon. Secretary."-
