OFFICER'S EQUIPMENT
AN APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC,
:An -urgent appeal is. made by the local Patriotic Society'for'funds to be expended in providing the < Wellington officers of the next draft of the Expeditionary. Force with revolvers, binoculars, and compasses. Officers attached to those sections of the Force coming from' Auckland, Christchurch, ana Duuedin, it is stated, have been presented with these'necessary articles of equipment by the citizens in their respective towns, but no such provision has yet b<kn' made for the Wellington officers of that part of the Expeditionary Force which 'is -now completing its training. . Tho Patriotic Society has therefore been requested to do what :it can .in the'niatter,-and already it has received from an .anonymous donor a cheque for £40, to be expended ill the purchase of binoculars. It will cost 6omething like £60. to provide , revolvers and compasses. ' Subscriptions .will be received and acknowledged, by Mr. Joseph Lewis, hon. secretary of the Patriotic Society, at his office, 18 Grey. Street, and all subscriptions must bo in band by to-night. The smallest donations will be welcomed. Mr. Lewis informed a reporter that officers received from the Defence Department an, equipment allowance of only £20, and .-their equipment (X.at about £50, apart from the articles which the public is now being invited to provide. Some ,of the officers are married men, and others are not in a financial position to bear the cost ,of their expensive equipment.
