MAGISTRATE'S COURT | POLICE CASES THE TUI STREET ASSAULT Ths case against James William Knott, charged with assaulting Francis James Wallace, was concluded yesterday in the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. W; G. Riddell, S.M. After hearing the evidence of accused's wife the Magistrate said that the provocation given by Wallace must have bean very slight indeed. Accused was very lucky that the injuries he had inflicted on Wallace were-not more serious. Knott would be sentenced to one month's gaol.

OTHER CASES. ; (Beforo-Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.) ] Two Chinese, Yee Bow and Chin Ah , Leong, alias Yen Leong Chin, were re- ; manded to Monday next on charges of , being found in the possession of opium , in a form suitable for smoking. < The case of the three seamen belonging to the Verdala named John Maiden, Arno Ariuo, and Oscar Erola charged (1) with absenting themselves without leave from that vessel; (2) wilfully disobeying the lawful commands 1 of the master of the vessel, again came before the Court. Mr.'A. W. Blair, on behalf of the prosecution, asked for a remand until to-day to enable the parties concerned to come to an amicable arrangement. Daniel Lynch, a seaman, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on a charge of deserting from the Athenio. Wm. Davis was fined £2, with costs, in default seven days' _ imprisonment, for being'drunk' while in charge of a' vehicle. •For drunkenness Mary Harding was sentenced to one month's , imprisonment. Joseph Thomas Barrett was fined 405.; in default seven days' imprisonment, • and Annie M'Grath and John Power each fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment. Four first offenders' were' dealt with. CIVIL CASE. A civil dispute concerning a lady's hat was heard before Mr. .W. G. Riddell, S.M., the parties being Jessie M. Johnston, of Sydney, plaintiff, and F, G. Potter, carrier, of 99 Mein Street, defendant. Plaintiff, claimed £10, the value of the hat, which she alleged she had given to defendant for cartage, ■ along with other baggage, on the arrival of tho Sydney boat. After hearing argument as to the value ladies' headgear, plumes, and so. forth, the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff] Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon for defondant. •.•■■■
