/ MR: GILFORD. In a short speech Mr.;T. Wilford Teturned thanks to the electors. There was a big hurst of cheering when he i appeared. Mr. Wilford Boid it was one of tho most strenuous fights ill which he had taken' part., The' candidate thanked all those who had worked on his behalf to help him to gain the position he had gained that evening. New Zealand waa-returning to the old Literal and .Labour , regime inaugurated by the late Mr. Seddon. On behalf of his wife and himself he returned, thinks to those who had placed him at the top of' the poll, and congratulated ljis opponent on tho good fight he had put ■up:for Reform. ' Mr. Samuel had done remarkably well for- his first.' attempt. ' Cheers were called for the speaker, and responded to loudly; He asked, those present to give three cheers -for his opponent, and for Mr.' Fletcher; Mr. M'Laren, and Mr. Hornsby. MR. SAMUEL./ Mr. Samuel was received enthusiastically. "I told yon at the outset," he said, "that no matter what side was victorious I would be the first to congratulate the winner. I havo done that privately, aiid will now do it publicly." (Cheers.) The speaker thanked his enthusiastic band of helpers, ( .ind declared , .there had not been a "cleaner fight in , the whole of the Dominion. He had been-defeated by about seven or eight hundred votes. The candidate called for three cheers for Mb opponent.,
