Vice-Admiral Sir F. C. D. Sturdee w as Chief of the Naval War Staff at the outbreak of war. Previously he commanded the second cruiser squadron (flagship ELM S. Shannon). Entered the Navy in 1871; captain, 1899; rear-admiral, 1908. Served in the Egyptian war, 1882 (Egyptian Medal Alexandria Clasp, Khedive's Bronze Star): assistant, to Director of Naval Ordnance, 1893-97; Assistant Directoi' of Naval Intelligence,. 1900-02; Chief of Staff, Mediterranean Fleet 1905-07; Chief of Staff, Channel Fleet, 1907; A.D.C. to the King, 190708 • Rear-Admiral First Battle Squadron , 1910. Received the Gold Medal of the Royal' United Service Institution, 188 6 and 1894; commanded British Force in Samoa, 1899 (decorated).
