The whole.Empire has been thrilled to its furthest outposts by. the news received yesterday thaji the German Fleet -which has been prowling about the Pacific has at last been, sent to its account. Vice-Admiral Sturdee, commanding the British Squadron dispatched to the South 'Atkntic for the express purpose'of way-laying and engaging the enemy's ships, sighted his quarry .off the Falkland Islands, engaged them, and sunk the German, flagship' Scharnhorst, with' Admiral Count • von Spee on board, the Gneisenau, and the Leipzig, while at latest accounts .the other two ships of the marauding squadron, the Dresden and Nurnberg, were being hotly pursued—their doom is a moral" certainty. That leaves but two more, the Karlsruhe and the Bremen, .and when these have been dealt with the broad oceans will hare been swept olear of the German fighting ships. These last two are believed to -be .in the Atlantic. With - the armies .' on land matters' are going very satisfactorily for' the Allies. The Germans in Poland, reinforced by five army corps and five cavalry divisions, have developed extensive operations along the Vistula,'and are reported to have menaced the line of communications behind .Warsaw by a movement from Mlawa, near the northern frontier.- 'They are also making violent attacks in Central Poland, and . have attempted to outflank the Russians on the Cracow line. At all points, however, the Russians have got the situation well in hand. From Servia' come reports of further disasters to the Austrians. In Belgium and Northern France the Allies are making steady progress. s 'A violent attack by the Germans on the Dixmude line was repulsed, and the enemy's front bent back. In these operations the Belgians hare added to their reputation for resourceful fighting and bold initi-. ative. In the near Eastern theatro the British-Indian operations in Mesopotamia have been crowned with success, and the whole district . is now lost to the Turks.- The Kaiser is seriously ill, and German court circles are depressed. '
