(Troni Onr. Own OorresDondenta.) : ■ The quarterly, meeting of the Petone Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present the chairman (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Messrs. Kempthprne, Anderson, and Ching. The Ohristchurch Fire Board asked for support .in its endeavour to get legislation to provide that the' owners of places of amusement, 'hotels, business premises, etc., shall instal a complete and efficient system of automatic thermostat and fire. alarms connected direct with all fire stations in the respective oities and towns in New Zealand. Mr. Kempthorne pointed ou : t thab the' scheme would involve a heavy expense, but the beard agreed to support the movement; I'ho Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged receipt of a. copy of the by-laws, and in respect to Clause, 2 (requiring explosives to be stored in a properly constructed fireproof magazine), it was pointed out that no lead was given to know what constituted such; a magazine, and desired to know if the point had been considered. It was decided to-ask the Minister if he would agreo to the deletion of the clause. The report of the Inspector of Fixe Boards stated that the firm-alarm installation and all the plant was in good order, and during the year 22 calls had received, 18 being active fires. The fire loss amounted to £3866, as against £593 for 1913. The Superintendent's report for the quarter stated that four.calls had been given, two being false alarms. • The telescopic, and other ladders were in good' working or-, der and tho alarm system connected' with the men's houses were, working well. The secretary (Mr. W. J., Gardner) reported that after, paying: all accounts and salaries to December 31; the board had a credit balance, of £195 Uβ. 6d.
