The Opposition papers ridiculed' this idea as preposterous, but a striking justification of the "Press's" argument appears in to-night's "Evening News," Th.e following jb what the "News" says/—ln one pf the largqsji anc} most' widely-circulated papers in New York, and no doubt in dozens of other papers throughout the length and breadth of the United States, there appeared on. September 7 cablegrams
from Melbourne and Sydney sent out by the Central News Agency of London, in which the following passages occurred:—"The Government has been defeated at the election. The Labour Party has a substantial lead." "The verdict is an indication of opposition to tho war policy." These cable messages . bore the headings ''Australians Against Government's Policy. Is Blained for Defeat at Polls." And they are followed, by this comment: '.'ln yiow of London reports of Australia's whole-souled support of Great Britain in tho European war. the above dispatches may bo more significant than appears on the surface."
