In; the. case of Gisborne'Sir,James Carroll lias unquestionably lost much ground. He has carried on a strenuous campaign but he, has confined his addresses chiefly to the Waiuku railway and the'alleged "canteen scandal," "together with a glorification-of ; the work done in the course of the Liberal regiifae. More cautious opinion is that' it: is a case' of touch' and go. ' !' : ; ' As Tegardsßay of-Plenty, _ Mr.' MacDonald has carried on a bitter, campaign, hut his supporters are not oyer sanguine. Ho has done himself immense harm among the settlers by a statement at Te Karaka that although some Red Feds helped Mr. Ma'ssey at the last election,. they (the Red Feds) know who their friends were : now.
