W? peqt.ttani on ttie date and with the convoy fixed, by the Admiralty. The Admiralty and not the New Zealand Government appointed the later convoy, including the Australia, which mot the first convoy at Noumea and proceeded thence to $airioa. The New Zealand Government requested the Imperial Government to satisfy us of f^the'sufficiency of the convoy to ensure the safety-of- the New Zealand troops; but did not, make any request for service as a convoy or otherwise of the Australia, or of any vessel 'of the A*istralian Squadron, While 1 think it necessary to' correct the statement, I need-hardly say we highly appreciate the protection afforded to New Zealand by tnervessels of the Australian Squadron during the recent very serious crisis/.'".;.':) ~
