DRAPERS AWARD

THE UNION'S DEMANDS. Proposals for a new award in the drapery trade have been filed by the union, and tie Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hallv) has notified- the parties that he will hear the dispute ou Wednesday next. The union's demands embody the following main points:— . , • Wages.—Departmental managers, £5 10s. per week; window-dressers, £4 10s.; canvassers, £3 10s.: seniors (males), £3 10s. (females) £2 55.; aesistante (males), from 15s. in the first year to £2 15s. in' the sixth year (females) from'l2s. 6d., in the first year to £1 17s. 6d. in the sixth year; head storeman,- £3 5§.; storemen or packers, £3; assistants from los. for. those 16 years of age to £2 15s. for those 21 yeareold; casual hands (males), 1. 9d. pev hour (females) Is. 3d. per hour. Hours. —Seniors and persons receiving in excess of senior wage, from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on five days, and-9 a.m. to noon on the statutory half-holiday; juniors, 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and 8.30' a.m. to noon; apprentices, storemen, and packers, 8 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., and 8 ajn. to noon. . In all cases one hour ia allowed for ' lunch.

In addition to the public .holidays all employees who have complpted a year's service are to receive two weeks' holiday on full pay. Not moro than one approntico or junior shall be employed to "every four seniors.. .The following assessors have been ■nominated:—For the union—Messrs. Ohas. Barker, A. J. Humphreys, and A. W. Croskery; for the master drapers —Messrs. Thomas Bush, F. J. Caterer, and W. Simin.
