Sir Edwin Pears settled in Constantinople in 1873, practising in the Consular Courts. Hβ became President of the European Bar in that city in 1881. As correspondent of the London "Daily News," he sent letters in May and June, 1876, on the Moslem atrocities in Bulgaria, two of which were published in Blue Books and 'awakened widespread interest, which was followed by popular demonstrations led by Mr. W. E. Gladetone.
