PUBLIC SERVANTS' DONATIONS
AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT. Tho following memorandum has been addressed by. the Hon. H. D. Bell (Minister of Internal Affairs) to the heads of all Departments in the Public Service:— "I desire to express the thanks of the Government to the members of tho Public Service for the manner in whicji they voluntarily combined to provide so large an addition to the Patriotic War Fund. . "Tho contributions from all Departments of the Public Service, other than the Post Office, Police, and Railways, amounts to £6593 os. 5d., from the Post Office to £2250, from the Police to £941 os., Bd., and from the Railways (special fund) to £2300: ' "The total is no less a sum than £12,084 Is. Id. subscribed within three' months by a body of men whose-sala-ries are already subject to considerable monthly deductions for their superannu-; tion funds, and even -that •, total does not include, the amounts contributed 1 by tho Servico to the British and Beleian Relief Funds, and to the Distressed New Zealanders' Fund.: The Service in this, as in many other respects since the outbreak of war, has set an example to the whole Dominion of generous sacrifice to the call of tho Empire. ■ ■ "I am sending this circular letter to all heads of Departments, and have to request them to make known to the members of the Service how fully tho 'Government appreciates the patriotic spirit which has been shown.
