TERRIBLE CARNAGE IN POLAND

GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS HURLED BACK Jf RUSSIANS CLOSING I i ■ ■ ■ ' ■ .•>■ : ENEMY'S ATTACKS REPULSED HOT FIGHT ON THE AISNE : ' GERMAN MOVE FOILED : THE ROUND UP OF DE WET 'From both the Eastern and Western theatres the war news to-day is eventful and encouraging.' The enveloping movement of the Russian armies in Poland is being desperately contested by the Germans, heavily reinforced, and the carnage, southward of Lodz is eaid to have been terrible. Everything points to the successful continuation of the Russian operations. One report states that but for the tardy arrival of Generalßennenkampfe army from the north, the Russian trap would have closed, and closed effectively, on the Germans. His failure to arrive left the way of escape open, and, we are told, the unlucky general has been suspended. The Russian invasion of Hungary has ■ penetrated to a fresh point on the enemy's side of the Carpathians, ■while in the beleaguered Galician fortress of Przemysl the plight of the populace is indeed desperate—disease, hunger, and pillage are hastening the fall /of the great fortress. In the • Franco-Belgian theatre there has been a series of sharp encounters right along the whole battle-front, the results being in favour of the Allies, fresh posi- , tions being gained. A big German attack on the Yser is pending. Italy has declared her policy: in the words of the Italian Premier, at the opening of Parliament, "Neutrality cannot be the exclusive aim of Italian policy." The story of the round-up of the notorious de Wet in South Africa makes interesting reading. The pursuit was, hot, and the 'surrender bloodless.' .
