MR. WRIGHT'S CAMPAIGN

CAUSTIC EEJOINDEE TO ME. FITZ- . GEEALD. Mr. E. A. Wright, Eeform candidate for tlie Suburbs, speaking at Karori last evening, replied to certain Briticisms of Mr. Fitzgerald at Plimmerrori. Mr. Wright said that he could not blame Mr.; Fitzgerald for bis inaccuracies. Thej were part of:.the legacy oi the Liberal Party and were another signal proof of the inability of his opponent to grasp the facts as they were. When Mr. Fitzgerald told the eleotorS that the Government had allowed cigars and liquor to come in duty free, for Government House, he was perfectly well'■aware-of the fact that the Imperial authorities had asked the Government' whether they would allow such articles to come in free for the representative of His Majesty l in the Dominion, and 60 come' into, line with the practice prevailing in every other British colony. Of course the Government did, oxactly what Sir Joseph. Ward, would have.done and what had actually : been done by the Continuous Ministry; they acceded to the request of' the Homo • authorities. Mr. Fitzgerald" forgot to point out this controlling fact; it was convenient to possess 'an : ;elastic memory." Mr. Fitzgerald had blamed-the Government for importing a manager of railways. He ventured, to. say it was a stroke of policy that was already justifying itself, and it woul abundantly justify itself in the future. The railway communications of this country were admittedly antiquated, and ■ despite a.splendid body of employees, the system was, as an Australian authority had declared, a disgrace. They were, emphatically Mid Mr. Wright, a disgrace, to 21 years of "Liberal," progressive administration. He defended the recommendations fop constructing modern buildings in the four city centres, of overhauling the time-table, speeding up trains, building and completing lines in the country districts, and 6aid that w© were on the great-railway developments, Mr. Wright also, categorically refuted Mr. Fitzgerald's allegations in regard to finance and land settlement, and said that it was observed at Plimmerton. that it was a significant fact his opponent entirely, avoided the question of the strike, or the relations of Labour and Liberals. SIR JOSEPH WARD ADDEESS AT.TE KUITI. (By Telegraph.—Pises Association.) ... ■ Te Kuitl, December 3. Sir Joseph Ward, in hie address' tonight to an audience of about eight hundred in the Empress Theatre, dealt with the misrepresentations of his opponents which rendered it necessary for him to tour the country. He spoke for over _ two hours, dealing with finance, taxation, defence, and the naval question. He outlined the policy which would be promoted by the Liberal Party if it regained offioe. Th© policy included extension of the advances system by establishing agricultural banks; further humanitarian legislation; inoreaee' of the graduated tax; reduction of the Customs tariff; proportional system of voting; baby bonus. He criticised the Government's financial operations, claiming that Mr. Massey had borrowed to an ■, unprecedented extent. ' At the oonolusion of the speech a vote of thanks ,-.nd confidence was carried • Cheers were gfren for Sir Joseph Ward and 1 Mr. Jennings, the Liberal candidate with counter-cbeera and hoots for Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward was banqueted.
