NEW HOSPITAL SUPERINTENDENT
' DR.:W. J.'.BARCLAY' APPOINTED. At,a special meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held yesterday afternoon, Dr. W. J. Barclay; ■ B.A. (New Zealand), M.D., P.E:C.S., D.P.H. (Edin.), was appointed to succeed Dr. Ha-rdwick Smith-as medical superintendent of the 'Wellington. Hospital, subject, of course, to the approval of the Minister of Public He.althl; 'Dr.. Barclay, who was selected : out of : twenty-six applicants, .is a -native of Auckland, and has been for some time superintendent of the Southland Hospital at Invercargill. Dr. Barclay graduated at the Edinburgh.University, where he had experience in many departments of medical work. After extensive study there he obtained the'degree,of Doctor of Medicine, the Fellowship of the Royal College"of Surgeons,- and the Diploma in Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh. When he returned to' New Zealand ho .acted in several places as locum tenens, was four years in private practice, and for the past three years has been in charge.of the Southland Hospital, the X-ray department,. tho Pathological Laboratory, the Kew Fover Hospital, Lome. Farm, and the Southland Board's Home for Old People and Children. Dr. Barclay, who is 40 years of age, is unmarried! Altogether he has had fourteen years' experience 'in his profession. ' ■/. ■ ~ In support of Dr. Barclay's application, Sir. A. F. Hawke (chairman of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board) referred to the satisfaction , Dr. Barclay had .given/and mentioned that he had saved the board a good deal of money, tinie, and friction. ■■'■■. ; •Writing of Dr. Barclay's work '■ as medical officer in charge of the Fever : Hospital at ißrighton, Dr. Arthur News--1 holme said in conclusion: —"A review of. the work carried out during your.stay with ine here does not efficiently ex?ress' my appreciation of your, services, wish to add a word as to my appreciation; of tho hearty manner in which you have co-operate dwith me piithe numerous occasions in which you have, thus been atle to relieve the stress and anxiety -,of my work. '' ■'■/■' Sir Wm. Turner, M.8., -" F.R.C.S., Professor of Anatomy at the Edinburgh University, wrote on July 25, 1900-.—■ "I have the pleasure to state that"Mr. W.J. Barclay, M.8., and C1i.8., waii a very distinguished student in the faculty of medicine in this' university, and on the occasion of his graduation last yoar ho obtained the Ettles Prize, w.hich is given to the most distinguished student of the year. He took a high position in my cla'ss, haying obtained a medal in .the examinations as a junior, and the same, as a senior student, and, suhsequently he acted as one of the student demonstrators. He has gone through a very complete course of study, and.has gualifwd himself to specialise his work in the future.', , - ' Dr. Barclay mil take up his duties in Wellington early in the New Year.'
