Rear-Admiral Mahan was regarded as the greatest contemporary'authority on naval strategy, and his writings exercised a tremendous influence on the development of modern sea power. His standard work, "Tho Influence of Sea Power Upon History" (1890) is a great naval-classic. Mahan was,a frequent contributor to contemporary-literature, and his topical observations upon now developments in naval policy, "invariably attracted world-wide attention, and commanded a respectful hearing.- He was born in 1840 at West Point, New York, and served in tho Federal Navy during the Civil War, retiring in 1896 from, active service. . ■...''
