ACCOUNTANTS STUDENTS SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING, The president (Mr.. B. W. Hunt) presided at tho twelfth animal meeting'of members of the Wellington Accountants' Students) ■ Society last evening. There was a good attendance of members. The president said that before formally moving the adoption of the twelfth annual report and accounts he thought it only fitting that some reference should be made to the great and terrible war which is now raging in Europe, and in which our own nation is playing a most important part. Unfortunately, valuable lives have been and will bo lost, but this sacrifice must be made in order to ensure that there -will be no possibility of a recurrence of the menace in The niembors of the society are represented in the Expeditionary Force, and will no doubt be in tho firing line in the near future. "Our sincere wishes that, after carrying out their duty for their King, they ■may return fit and well to N again take their places amongst us. Wo, are.all' confident that the.ultimate result will be a decisive victory for Britain and her Allies, and , tho crushing of a nation which has for maiiy years done so much tp disturb the world's peace." Continuing; Mr: Hunt, dealing -with the business of the meeting, congratulated the. society upon the result of the year's operations. The membership was practically the same as it was twelve months ago, and stands at the present time at 122. Ho then went on to trace the history of tho society from its inceptionsome 11J- years ago. Since that time the society had not made a backward step. Its membership, had gradually increased, and its usefulness had been extended till past and present members of the society were scattered throughout the Dominion and overseas,' nany holding important positions of trust, whilst others were practising the profession of accountancy. Dealing with the work of the society, the president 6aid that the syllabus had been.one of exceptional interest,- and the subjects had been well discussed. . ' . .

There had been an endeavour on the part of the committee to induce the members themselves to take an active part in the meetings, and this had proved a decided step in the right direction. Reference wae also made to what Mr. Hunt characterised as "the-most important event of the year" when members of the Wellington' Society paid it visit to the Christchurch Society. Thanks. of the Wellington Society had been. . extended to the Christc'hurchSociety , for the trouble which had been.'.' taken to . entertain , the; visitors.'".-. The , visit will probably be returned this year. The examinations of 4he Society of Accountants had been'placed on a sound, and satisfactory footing. Touching -on the complaints' of students -certain matters arising out of these examinations the president eaid' that no' doubt there, had been, to a certain extent, cause for. complaint. It must be admitted, however, that the standard of examination under present conditions; and,the arrangements made with the university had placed the examinations on a very much higher footing than was previously the case. If the examination was' Somewhat harder than that of a.few years ago, students .would do well;to appreciate tha fact that this raising of the standard; improves the status of the examination , wlien.completed( and.thaj; this .must be distinctly to their own benefit. Later, in this present month a' conference will be held, between the 'various lecturers in accountancy at the, four University Colleges and...the.Jexamination: committee, with the ' object'of'"'discussing,ra'.'rium- 1 ,ber of matters ' of '. vital importance to students. .It was 'considered' that, the lecturers would be in'a position to place facte before the committee from- the students' point of view,' and it- was with this object' in view that the conference had /been decided upon. In conclusion Mr,-; Huni said that he jelt confident that the. society , -.would go. on; and prosper to . even, a greater .extent ■ than; it', had, done in the past. "The success of the society rests'with . the members themselves, and there is every reason to expect.a , continuance;of>!the interest on the .part of. members. mere passing, of.'.examinations ;is not : tKe main, object .of/.the members,' v but is merely : a means'to, an .end:",-vHe, .moved > the adoption, of. the .'report.: '. . . . ..^" . :Mr. Hv?D.
