NOTES 'AND COMMENTS
TBt GlEnooe. - )
The annual meeting of the Hororata Racing Club will be. : held on. Saturday. Ihe fields, are large, and include representatives', from the leading'stable3 at Riccarton.- ',' ' '" ' The Fordeli: horseman, C. Price, rode four winners'at'Feildwg on Monday. His successes -were 1 gained on Rewi- Poto, Maniaroa, -.• Postillion, and- Princess Moutoa. ; ~:..,.:•■ ■ Better • handled -Master Achilles should have defeated Orleans in the Nikau Hack Handicap at Feilding. The Levin-trained gelding came from a long way back and covered a lot of unnecessary ground. At Feilding on Monday the Achilles horse Chillies got badly away in the lork Stakes, but he'then put in such good .work that.he was flying past everything as the • post was reached, and it certainly looked as if he should have been a place-gedter..' A much-discussed, topic at Feilding' was which is the best three-year-old in the Dominion to-day. The issue is generally considered to lie between First Flight and Reputation, and though Balboa won the C.J.C. Derby, on all sides he was considered-lucky. The contest between the trio at the Auckland meeting will be quite the star iteniof the gathering. Jockey H. Lowe, who has been riding in Australia for some time' past, returned to Wellington by the Moeraki -yes. terday.
It is stated that owing to the injuries ho received in thoj St. Leger, Kin? George's colt Brakespear may not race again.. • Though a' good colt, Brakespear was not quite first-class, and next yeat His Majesty may go closer to winning the Derby or St. Leger with Friar Marcus. The Feilding Jockey Club is shortly to embark big scheme of'improvements. Additional land has been secured, »nd the whole course will be reconstructed. , The grandstands are to bo shifted, and the lawn and saddling paddock will be considerably enlarge)!. When. Valhalla won" the 'Flying Handicap, at Canterbury Park he started favourite. Sydney papers say he won by half a neck. . , Mr. E. J.-Watt returned to'• Hastings' yesterday. ' Ho has been absent in Sydnej. and Melbourne for some months. The hard race he had on. the first day seemed to get to the bottom of The Rover and. though heavily, backed in the Cheltenham Hurdles at Feilding he ran very badly, and was the last but one' to pass tha judge. \n ithis event Player, who was also heavily supported, broke down. The good-looking Gold. Soult wus very heavily backed in the Nikau Hack Handicap at Feilding, but ho shaped badly nnd was' not amongst the first half-dozen at the finish. - Portraiture was very sore after winding the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, and he was scratched for the big race on Monday. . ' •. .Six hundred applications have been received for the position of ranger at Band: wick racecourse, which carries a salary'of .£3OO per year'and quarters.. When Postillion scored in the Oroua Stakes'at Feilding it made his si'conrt win in that event, out of as ninny starts. The black horse is very well just now, and wil go north to fulfil his engagement in'the'Railway Handicap at Elierslie. The.son. of Advance is a lwtter horse 'n a small field than he is in a large one, and may not show to advantaaeiat Ellerslio- ■ • At the Hororata moeting on Saturday
T, W. Price jun.; of Eiccarton, will aot us 9tartor. Price is a well-known driver of-trotters, and for «>mo :lime cast n\> has acted as assistant to tho late Mr. U. Piper. ( W.'Ryan, who has been acting as first korieriian for tho Karamu stable for tho past couple of seasons, has resigned tho post, and will in future ride as a, freo lance.,- . In connection with •the Marton Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, owners are reminded that nominations for all events (including the Trial Hack Plate) will close at the secretary's office, Marton, on Friday next, at 8.30 p.m. '! Nominations for all events'at tho Tara-tahi-Carterton Racing Club's annual meeting close at 9 o'clock on Friday night. The Stratford Racing: Club' has embarked upon a new departure in connection with its New Year Meeting, to bo held on the Stratford Racecourse on January 1 and 2.. No open events now figure in the club's programme, and the result is that the prizes offered for hack competition, with few.exceptions, are very much larger than those offered by other clubs. The Stratford, Cup, for instance, is endowed with 250 sovs., which is an excellent stake for a' hack cup, and the Dominion Handicap on the second day accounts for 200 sovs. Other, good prizes are 1 the Plying and Ngaere Handicaps (six furlongs), 150 sovs each; the-Makuri Hurdles, 125 sovs.; the Ohura Hurdles, 150 sovs.; and the Midhirst Handicap, of 125 sovs. All the other events are of 100 60v6., wit!) the exception of . • two gentlemen rider's events of 75 sovs. each. Mr. J. E. Henrys will again frame the Handicaps. Nominations for the meeting close on December 7. . . General entries for the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting close on Fril' -Acceptances for.the Auckland Cun and Railway Handicap are due at the same time, also forfeits ' for several I events.
