The liner reported that on her way from Cape Horn two German cruisers threatened her, and another sent S.O.S. messages to trap her. After leaving. Monte Video the Ermuera sighted warships. She then extinguished all lights, steamed at full 6peed,' and, , changing her course, eluded them. The Remuera is duo at Wellington on JanuaTy 12' NEW STEAMEES FOR AUSTRALIA. Howard Smith, of tho firm of noward Smith and Sons; on being interviewed on his arrival from London, said that there are three steamers building for tho Australian Steamships, Ltd., into which the shipping business, of the firm .had been merged. Two of these steamers are large cargo boats, and one of small typo. Their construction had been delayed because of, the demands of' the Admiralty for warships. Although there ore considerable facilities for private- dealings in'stocks and shares, British investors ore holding very tightly to' their shipping securities (says an exchange). On the whole, holders of . shipping securities are not at all perturbed by the prospect of higher coal costs.i proV minms for war insurance, and the shortage of cargo which must be affecting many shipping companies. Government contracts in some measure may compensate for these disadvantages.
