SOUTHERN MARKETS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) '"'"'.'-•'' Christoliuroli,' December 1. The showery weather experienced lor a week past will liavb the most beneficial effect' upon the grain cropo, as tlio soil lias not been so well saturated since tho beginning of winter. Tho oats crops ou lignt land had been , too tar advanced to make much further growth,, but the wheat crop 6 and oats on stronger ground may now bo oxpected- to come away well. The rain will also enable the sowing of rape and turnip and other fodder crops to bo proceeded with, and with' the clianco of their getting a, good, start There is nothing: doing in'the grain market. An effort is being made to provide political capital out' of the supposed holding of wheat by farmers, but eo far as is known to the grain trade, few largo holders of wheat iu North Canterbury recently dis-posed-of their stocks. There is little inquiry for oatsheaf chaff, but practically none is offering. Only a small amount of business is being done in potatoes, as tho season is now practically over. Tho price is £3-10e,.t0 £3 156. at country stations.
