THE RAID ON PENANG - (Reo. December 1, 7.20 p.m.) Sydney, December 1. Captain. Over two hundred of the Jemtchug's crew vera saved by boats from various vessels. The Emden flew tho German flag as she was leaving.. Tho French destroyer Mousquet was sunk in a gallant attempt to disable the Eindon as she was leaving. Twenty of the Mousquet's crow were 6aved, most- , ly by the Emden, which subsequently ' held up a British steamer and placed i them on board. • At the time of the raid the Nigaristan was lying near the Jomtchug, waiting to coal her. Tho Jemtchug was having her. boilers cleaned, nul was caught unawares. Most of the crew woro asleep. One dfficer and eighty-eight men; wero killed, while three officers and a- hundred and twenty men were wounded. The above account disclosos for the first time the identity of tho French destroyer—previously referred to in the. cable messages as a gunboat.
