PIGS AS RAILWAY FREIGHT The last Dominion Conference of the Farmers' Union passed a motion urging thai; hooks should be provided in the roadside wagons, in order to facilitate the conveyance of carcasses of pigs by railways. In reply to this representation, tho Secretary for Agriculture (Mr. P. S. .Pope) has written as follows to the union:—'"l' llavo the honour to inform that "tho chief objection to ■the'carrying out of yoiir suggestion is that the v cai'casses would require to be suspended frorii the roofs of .the covered vans,' and would be chafed considerably with the motion of tho train. In such a. position the space occupied in the trucks would bo excessive, and in many eases there would be 110 room for other goods. While desirous of meeting your wishes as far as practicable, I regret that I cannot see my way to adopt your suggestion.' It is considered, however, that carcasses of pigs would bo carried under better conditions if the consignors were to provide suitable coverings for them."
