ISLAIjD A BRISTLING FORTRESS. (Rec. November 30, 5.15 p.m.) London, November 29. A "Times" correspondent describes his visit to Heligoland, gained through a- gentleman lie outertained years ago. "The island," he says, "has completely changed since the war began. The beautiful little bathing place has been converted into a huge fortress, tremendously fortified. All civilians were compelled 1o leave the island and only naval men are to be seen in the streets. All are _ busy, continuously improving the fortifications. Many of the houses and trees have been removed to give an uninterrupted view of the sea. Doubled guards of sentries watch unceasingly to prevent surprise.' The only women on the island ape five nurses."
