I x SUPREME COURT SENTENCE INCREASED. In the Supreme Court on Saturday morning, tho caso of the prisoner, Boborb Phair, was mentioned- before His Honour tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout). Phair had pleaded guilty at Hastings to a charge, of breaking and entering and theft, and on Wednesday last His Honour ordered tho accused to be detained for a period of nine months in the Inebriates' Home at Roto Roa Island.' , The period of detention was on Saturday morning increased to twelve months. ,

■ DIVORCE CASE. His Honour the Chief Justice also heard an undefended divorce case oh Saturday morning. Louisa M. Trudgeon petitioned for dissolution of her marriage with John Trudgeon on the ground of desertion and failure to maintain. Mr. P. J. O'Regan, who appeared for the petitioner, called evidence to show that the marriage took place in Christchurch, and that the respondent had never maintained his wife. 'The desertion had extended over the statutory period. His Honour granted a decree nisi to be made absolute at tho end of three months. Costs on the. lowest scale were allowed against the respondent.

. THE TRUSTEE ACT, 1908. Sitting in Ohair-hers, His Honour the Chief Justice heard'a petition for the appointment of a new trustee under the Trustee Act, 1908, in re.the policy on the life of the late Thomas Kennedy Macdonald. Mr. C. W. Tringham appeared in support of the petition and His Honour made the order asked for.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. D. G. A, Coopor, S.M., presided over a short sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. Annie M'Grath, John O'Neil, and Charles Rotnerham were each fined 10s., m default 48 hours' imprisonment, for insobriety. Mary Donaldson, charged with insobriety, was remanded for medical treatment. I , A young man named Ernest Handell, charged, with having disturbed a public meeting, held under the auspices or the Now Zealand in the lowii Hall on Friday night, and with having assaulted Sergeant. 0. Kelly in the execution of his duty, was remanded until next Saturday, on the application of Mr. J. J. M'Grath. Bail in the sum of £10 was allowed.
