FEILDING MEETING STAKES WON BY RANGITERO. VORTBAITUEE WINS ST. ANDREW'S HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) ■ Feilding, November 28. Tho first day of the JFeildinj; races was fine but wmdy. There was a large attendance, and tho totalisator handled £17125 against £W,26H last year. Boyal Hary, Formaliter. and Eamoanawhirr wero supported in that order for tho Trial Plate, for which there were fourteen starters. Eoyal Mary began smartly, just clear of Eamoan.awhiri, and they raced in this order to the turn, where the latter ran to the front and .iron very easily by four lengths. Mary Kilcheran was a poor third, and the Pori-rua-trained Jom next. The winner is a ivell-bred 'filly, and has shown pace in her previous starts.
.The Higlideii representative, Bertrada. carried most money in the Plyimj Stakes, with Boldshioke, Playoff, and Sunbird following in itliat order. The favourite jumped out well, but was quite unabie to go the fast pace set by Playoff, Heather, and Adroit. Heather led ' into tho straight when Sunbird and Astor closed up, andEewi Poto eame fast on tho outside. In a very close finish Playoff beat Astor b.y a head, with Sunbird a neck away. Kewi Poto, Bertrada, and Heather finished in.a line just behind the placed horeos. The'six acceptors wentf to the post for the St. Andrew s Handicap.' At the start Portraiture jumped out two clearlongthg from the field, arid led at a slow pace to the straight entrance,' -where Manawakaha and General toot . charge. Down the back the pace quickened, and ait the three furlongs ■ Maniaroa took charge, but ente'rinsfthe straight Portraiture ran to the leader and looked to be winning easily. Maniaroa, however, stuck to his task, and Oliver had to draw tho whip on Portraiture. The pair finished locked together. G«neral Webb was just ahead of Passadena. . Maniaroa was a good favourite, and Portraiture was next in public estimation. The latter appeared to be lucky to win, and Maniaroa should account for him when they meet on. the second day.
The Bover, who is onco more a member of A. M. Wright's team, was tho best backed in the Sprins Hurdles, but though he ran a good race and wns prominout throughout, 'he was just beaten for third place. Over tho first mile Timothy and tho favourite made play from a strung-out field. At the six furlongs Aru-. oke, Fashion Plate, and Glenorchy all became prominent, and at the'halt-mile Papador put in a claim, when Timothy retired. Amake led round the bend" from The Rover and Fashion Plate. The Rover was forced to cover a bit of extra ground. and Aruake was first over the last fence, nt ! which Fashion Plate stumbled. The latter quickly. recovered, and at 'the post she, was within a neck of Aruake. Papador just cut The Eover out of third place. Jlakiri, Taurangi, and Bercola finished a long way back. Considering that it was his first appearance for a considerable time The Eover <lid well. o,nd should improve considerably on ithis form at his next attempt. The little fellow stripped very well, and looks more like his old eelf than ho has done for a long time. ■ Despite tho fact that it was his first appearance, in a hurdle race Aratiatia was made a good favourite in the' Hack Hurdles', but Ms lep'ping was faultv, and, after being out m front for six fv rlongs, ho made a bad jump and went back into the middle of the field. With a.halfmile to go St. Gate led from Roseblush, but. in the straight Waiaio came fast, and though ho could not reach-the leader lie beat Eoseblush for second place. Eauparaha was at the head of tho remainder who were strung out. Battle Eve and Postillion divided favouritism in- tho Ninth Feilding Stakes, but: the. two-year-oUI had the call at the finish. There was a long delay at the start, owing to the fraotiousness of several of the youngsters. All tho competitors left the mark well together except Dribble. Eaugitero was soon in front, and was not headed, though Battle Eve and Postillion threw out strong challenges in the straight. -~ The last-named was carried out wide at the bend, otherwise he* might have defeated the winner, Battle Eve was a length away third, followed by Gladiole. Though a two-year-old won the race it was not tho public fancy, and in this respect it may be noticed that sinae the inception of tho race two-year-olds have always started strong favourites, but only one has been successful. This was Mr, W. Nidd's Peronilla, who also won the Welcome Stelces. The Kiwitea Welter was a good betting event, but the result was not foreshadowed on the machine, for Wild Lupin took charge at the rise of the barrier, and iras not again headed. Down the back Victoris and Bon Eain were 'nearest the leader,, but'.at the half-milo Guiding Way rushed into second place. , In the straight Kimbombi came through on the fence,.and disposed of Guiding Way, but had no chance with Wild Lupin, who won by four lengths. Guiding Way was a bare length behind Kimbombi, and then came Gazette, who finished very •fast. .
' A field of twenty horses lined up at the barrier for the Fitzroy Hack Handicap,, seven furlongs. The Haworatrained Quo Vadis, si full-brother to Coronetted, was the best backed, but Alces, Master Achilles, and PrineesH Mnutoa each received heavy support. Quo Vadia had been beating Tyson on the Hawera tracks, and this accounted for his support on the machine, but any chance ho had was spoilt by drawing nn oit'fcide number at' the start. When the field settled down Golden Sky was momentarily in front, bnt General .Madoro and Sir Alba soon took'charge. Racing round the home bend Alces and Eoumania Decame prominent behind the leaders, and in the straight Princess Moutna joined Issue with the last-mentioned. Ronmania. hard ridden by Emerson, won all out from'.Princess Moutoa with Alces, who had been unlucky, in,third nlape. The last-named'should do'better in her next, start, y ■■■' ■ •'■
