When a slight' financial depression occurred in 1909 .the-Right Hon. Sir J. Ward retrenched 1041 hands, and cut down the expenditure of public money, by £506,187. On September 9, 1910, he submitted a statement to Parliament indicating what Departments were dealt with This statement showed that from the Health Department 40 mon were dismissed; from Public Works and Mines, 156: from the Agricultural Department CO;' from, the- Lands 41 and from the Railways. 600.
