SWIMMING

OPENING OF THORNDON CLUB. The opening of the- swimming season by the 'fhorndon Swimming Club took place tllo Thorndon baths on Saturday afternoon in fine but , windy weather. The attendance was rather small, and the gathering this year was of a quiet nature, as a good number of the promiueufc swimmers are with the Expeditionary Force at Samoa, and a number of others are away with the main Expeditionary Force. It ■is ..pointed out by the club oilicials that those members who are left behind intend to keep the club going, and to encourage swimming amongst the junior members and the ladies, in ordor that, when the boys return, from inactive service, thoy will find that their old club has been well looked aftefl, and is in a strong and healthy condition. It is proposed to hold the first ladies' race early in the Now Year, so that the lady swimmers have over a month in which to get into form. The , junior competition will be lield as usiisl, and the boys are requested to get into training, in order to make the competition as interesting as is possible. During the afternoon tea was provided for the visitors. . Mr. A. W. Smith, in the absenco of the president, Mr. T. Konayne, 1.5.0., declared the season, open, and referred to the prospects ahead. During ■ the afternoon a fifty yards handicap was held, and resulted in . a win for T. G. Higginson, ex-champion of Wanganui College. \ Details are:— v Firfit heat: J. D. Burns; ssec, 1; N.
