THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

["By GlZncoe.]

At Feilding to-day proceedings will commence with' the Aorangi Trial Plate, a race for apprentices wlio have not ridden five winners. Wild Daisy, Eojal Mary, Bumoanawhiri, and Jem can all go fast, and well handlod should be prominent. On all sides the- Flying Stakes is admitted to be a very open race, and supporters of the winnen can rely on a good return. Bertrada, Grattan, Astor, Play-oif, Adroit, Boldstroke, and Sunbird are all certain of strong support, particularly Boldstroke, who defeated Battle Eve in a gallop before leaving h^ijie. From a numerical point of view, the poorest field of the day is the eight that are down, to compete in the St. Andrew's Handicap.' Lady Laddo, Bst. 91b., is anything but a good mare, and Portraiture, with the same poundage, should defeat her. Passadena, Bst. 81b., may race well fresh, but Maniaroa looks like the horse to get the distance best. He is thoroughly seasoned, and his party thought him good enough to contest the New Zealand Cup. The Spring Hurdles, two miles, has drawn an acceptance of eleven runners. Outside of Player they are not a good lot, and the Gisbdrne-owjied horse will probably be a good favourite. When at his best Player is a distinctly useful horse, and it must be,remembered that he was a firm favourite for the last National Hurdles. The Hack Hurdles will give backers a lot of thought, for there are several horses in the field that can go very fast oh the flat, and if they can jump their chances must be considered. St. Gate is theMjest performer of the lot, but Waipaku, Araciatia, The Diver, and others will 'worry him for a time. Battle Eve, the Welcome Stakes winner, may carry most money iii the Feilding Stakes, five furlongs. There will not be many runners in this event. - ( In the Iviwitea Welter Birkful and Guiding Way are on the; 9st. 9lb. mark, and the Hastings-trained Kimbombi has one pound less. Wild Lupin may be troubled by the distance, and the remaining quartet are hardly of the same class. Of the trio at the top of the handicap Guiding Way and Kimbombi have most to say. A very big field will start in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap. There are 25 acceptors, and fully 20 may be expected to.go to the post. Master Achilles'has recent form to recommend him, and so has Alces. Gold Soult may be the best of tho others. First Flight is being worked the reverse way at Riccarton, which means that if he continues on all right the colt will be sent north for the Great Northern Derby. The two-year-olds Adjutant and Flying Start are also likely to make the trip. 1 . » Signo (Soult—Signet), who . finished third in the Borough Handicap at Taka-' puna on the opening day, will be racing in hack class , to-day, and has only 61b. above, the minimum. Prior to the 6tnrt of the Tiri Hurdles at Takapuna on Wednesday Dogger Bank took charge of his rider, and bolted a couple of circuits. This, of . course, dimmed his prospects. R. Berry will ride Adroit and Passadena in thejr engagenilnts at Feilding to-day. The aged mare Salute, once a very smart sprinter, seems to have lost all and in the Borough Handicap at Takapuna on Wednesday she finished last. At Mr. Geo. Ciirrie's stud last week Our Lady, dam of Bronze and Beau Soult, foaled a colt, to Earlston. Prince Mcrriwee, one of the favourites for -the Auckland Cup, is to be ridden by C.,. Brown. , . The'two-vear-old Auckland colt Harleston, owned by llr. Geo. Dunnet. and which raced at the recent V.R.C. Spring Meeting, was brought from Australia by the Riverina on Tuesday, .and 'has gone into F. Stenning's charge. AtVa "meeting of, the stewards of the Foi 1 - bury-'Park Trotting. Club, held at, Dimedin last liiglit, a deputation representing tho owners was received. The result was that the decision,, arrived, at yesterday morning, to liokl the races on Wednesday and Saturdhv next was altered. The races will now-be held on Tuesday and Wednesday next.—Press Association.
