DISCHARGED PRISONERS' AID SOCIETY

'A meeting of'tli'e Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society was hold on Thursday, November 26, at 5 p.m. in tho Supreme Court' Chambers. Present: Mr. P. J. O'Regan (chairman), Messrs. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., E. Arnold, J.P., V.J., and B. Cummings (secretary). A report of the months'of August, September, October, and November was submitted to the meeting, : giving detailed particulars of tho various assistance given. Tho strain that was put upon the society after the late strike by the families' in dire has now been relaxed, and during the last months the number seeking assistance has been greatly reduced. One person, _ who was assisted with food and lodging for a time and faro to friends, after obtaining employment sent a'letter to Mr. E. Arnold; expressing deep, gratitude for the help given, and enclosed £1 as part-payment, with a promise to send more. The books and vouchers'of the society have been examined and audited by Mr. H. H. Ostler, Crown Solicitor, and found correct. The number helped in various ways for three months was: 51 men with 87 beds_ and 66 'meals, ,18 with food and lodging, two fares to work, five with cash, seven swags released, fivo with, clothes-, three with groceries, three advertisment, one, telegram': total, 95 helped; total released, 183, with funds £70 os. 4}d. Income, £86 9s. -9d. Payments, £35 ss. lOd. Tho following ladies and gentlemen and county councils have subscribed the various sums:—Rangitikei County Council, £5; Messrs. Staples and Co. £3 35.; Marton Borough Council and Sir Robert Stout, £2 25.. each: Messrs. Adams,' Wilford and Xjevi, T. Ballinger and Co., Roberts and Co., Cadbury Bros., Wellington Council, Chinese Consul, and Mr. C. E. Matthews, £1 Is. each; Mr. C. R. Broberg, Mrs. Morrah, and Mr. R., B. Smith, £1 each;' Messrs. Gray and Jackson, 10s. 6d.; R. P. Ward, and A. Hutchesou, 10s. each; Mr. Wakren, Bs.; ex-prisoner's refund, £1 ls._ The committee desire to express their sincere appreciation of the kind response to the appeal for funds to carry on tho work of the society for the benefit, of tho unfortunates.
