WILFORD V. MASSEY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I sea by your evening contemporary that Mr. Wilford, by way of criticising _ Mr. Massey, has published the following'letter:— ' "Prime Minister's Office, Wellington, 22nd January, 1914. "Dear Sir, —I duly received your letter of the 18th ult., regarding your application for employment as a gardener in Parliament grounds: I have noted your representation in support of tho request, and am bringing your case before the Public ' Service Commissioners for inquiry.

"Yours faithfully, "W. P. MASSEY.

"Mr. F, Derosa, "Melling Street, "Lower Hutt, Wellington." . Mr. _ Wilford apparently takes great exception to Mr. Massey having written a letter which is within the four corners of the law and which merely refers, to the Public Service Commissioners for inquiry the application made by a gardener for employment in. Parliamentary grounds. Would you kindly, inform your readers whether the highly moral Mr. -Wilford, who takes such exception to. the decidedly proper letter by -the Prime Minister,, is the same Mr. Wilford who wrote the now famous letter known as the "Mulvaney lettor" during the elections of 1896? Mr. Wilford's letter was as follows:— "Wellington, 25th October, 1896. "Dear Mr. S'eddon, —Let me introduce by this Mr. Joseph Mulvaney who is a supporter of myself in Karori, and who did a great deal for Dr. Newman on the last occasion. Mr. Mulvaney has considerable influence in Karori, and has to ask for assistance from you, such as a nightwatchman's billet, or anything else that is suitable. Will you do what ; you can for him ? '•'Yours truly, "(Sgd.V'T. M. WILFORD." .

If tlie two Mr. Wilfords'are identical then' may I bo permitted to observe tliat people who - live in glass houses should not thrown stones?—l am, etc.,: SOFT PEDAL.
