GREAT RUSSIAN VICTORY

, GERMAN CENTRE PIERCED -BATTLESHIP BLOWN DP LOSS OP H.M.S. BULWARK ■ BIG BATTLE PENDING. I BELGIUM FIGHTING IN EAST AFRICA

TThe Russian victory in Poland is of a character to inspire con(fidence. The Germans, believing that the main Russian force was operating in the direction of Czenstochowa, where the Crown Prince of Germany was in command, and was' being hard pressed, made a domon- ' etration in force in the direction of Warsaw. The Germans penetrated to the east of Lodz, breaking through a section of the Russian defenoe. The Russians, however, managed to get round and cut the Germans in' their Centre, and their right flank is enveloped and making desperate effort© to hew their way northwards. In the meanwhile the Grown Prince's army is retreating in disorder and abandoning arms, 'ammunition, and stores. .An official statement from Berlin, coming by way of Amsterdam, claims a big victory for German arms, and the captures alleged to have been made are on a colossal scale. The 'Austrians in Galicia have once more suffered a crushing defeat, and are evidently bent on seeking revenge in Servia, where a big battle in which half a milb'on men are engaged is now in progress. On the Belgian-French fighting line matters are quiet, but it is / stated that the Germans are making dispositions of their forces with the intention of offering battle on a formidable scale. The Allied forces are confident, although they fully expect the pending battle to be serious. An interesting item of news this morning is the action that is being taken by the South American Republio to maintain their neutrality. It' has been clearly proved that the German P&cific squadron has violated Chilean neutrality, and the protests made by the British and 'French Governments to the United States have proved effective. !A. piece of bad news is the loss of H.M.S. Bulwark, with terrible sacrifice of life. No definite information is available as to the cause of the explosion, which with fearful suddenness wrecked the vessel and sent about 780 men to their doom. •. All accounts agree that the explosion occurred! in the ship's magazine, and naval opinion is that the bottom of the yessel was blown out.
