THE BOY SCOUTS
The work accomplished /by the Boy Scouts created a favourable impression on the Rev. A. M. Johnson, vicar of St. Paul's, who has just returned from England. In the course of an interview Mr. Johnson remarked ;—"One of the things that struck me during the oxciting days succeeding the war was the only organised body_ at the command of the authorities—the _ Boy Scouts. The Army and the Territorials were being, mobilised iis speedily as'possible, but at first' there were not sufficient of the'latter to perform certain necessary duties, and General BadenPowell at once offered the Scouts, and their services were immediately accepted. • It was a common ,sight to see the boys guarding the bridges and viaducts everywhere. For example, there is a viaduct a third of a mile in length near where I was staying in Gloucestershire, and every arch was watched by a Boy Scout. They had no arms, but each yScout had his whistle, and when there were any suspicious characters lurking about the alarm would be given and the proper precautions taken to prevent any mischief being done. Then rn London hundreds of- Boy Scouts attended at the Victoria and Charing Cross Stations and were detailed to look after Belgian refugees and their lugga»o and escort them to given places. The Scouts are still doing _ good work as messengers and in various other capaoities all over the Kingdom. They really did splendid work."
