KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL
. . ■ . / . TRAM SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS,
At Tuesday's meeting of the Karori Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. W. T; Hildreth) presided, and there were also present Councillors B. G. H. Burn, W Bradnock, L. P. Davies, A. Hamilton, W. Skegg, and C. T. Cimino. Leave of absence' was granted to Councillors J. W. Henderson, P: C. Jordan, and T. R. Boyes. Replying to the council's letter in regard to the question of overcrowding on outward-bound cars after 5 p.m., the traffic superintendent of the City Tramways (Mr. M. Cable) wrote stating that a seven and eight minutes' service, which had been, tried from Courtenay Place to Johnston Street', had not proved satisfactory, arid the arrangement' of running the special cars in duplicate with the cars which leave Courtenay Place at 5.2 p.m. arid 5.17 p.m. had-since : been reverted to. _ Iri regard to the minimum fare question, arrangements had been made (commencing on Monday, November 23) to apply this system to the car leaving Courtenay Place at 5.32 p.m. If this proved satisfactory, the arrangement might be extended to ■>the 6.2 p.m. car, but in view, of the duplication of the 5.2 p.m. and 5.17 p.m. cars, the Tramway_ Board sawjno necessity to apply the minimum fare to these cars.'
Tho Mayor said it was not a matter of surprise that the seven and eight minutes' service had.not been satisfactory, as no notification of the change had been given to the public. Ho considered that it was utterly absurd to charge the minimum fare on the 6.32 p.m. car, as this was right between the rush hours. 'Me moved thflt the letter be referred to the Tramway Committee, and they could bring down a report on this and Councillor Skcgg's motion,, which was, to follow later in tho evening. In' the meantime he understood the City Council would have the matter tinder consideration. The motion was earned. Councillor Skegg's motion, which was nlso referred to the Tramway Committee, read as'follows:—"That a deputation consisting of 'nil tho tnombflra of tile Karori Borough Council, including tlie engineer and town clerk, wait -upon the City Council at the earliest possiblo Sato for the purpose of urging the'introduction of a complete reform in tho. tramway service, including (1) an improved time-table; (2) abolition of stnn-over-time; (3) reduction in car miloaße; (4) abolition of double fare on -Into tram; (5) elimination of trams running to Northland only; (G) minimum faro on trams ot rush hours; and any other desirable reforms." . . . A protest from a. mimbor of Karon residents on the .inadequacy of tlm service was likewise referred to tho Tramway Committee.
