Tlio Hutt Park Committee met on Tuesday at Lower Hutt, • there being present Messrs. H. Baldwin (chairman), M'Ewan, Brocklobank, and Hqbbs. A letter appreciating the patriotic action of tlip committee, iu placing the park at the disposal or troops, was received from Major-Genoral Godloy, Officer Commanding the Expeditionary Forces. The Defence authorities intimated that headquarters had been advised to make the following. payments in full settlement of claims for damage done whilst the troops 1 occupied the park:—£so to the committee, for damage- to totalieator houso; £20 for cleaning up, and ex. editing minor repairs; and £12 to Mr. S. V. Burridge for destruction to grass and.loss of "grazing. When the Ministerial authority was granted for these payments, the committee would be advised. The" Education Board, in a communication with respect to the proposed High School site, suggested that it would bo convenient to meet the committee on January 28' to discuss the matter. The committee agreed to meet the board on that date: The Petone Borough Council advised that it had acceded to the committee's request for an advance of £80 on account of the current year's subsidy. The Lower Hutt Council claimed £143 os. for rates for five years on the park, but added that if payment was made for two years' rates the council would write off the amount owing for the balance of the period. ' In discussing this matter," a legal opinion obtained by the Petone Council from the Municipal Association's solicitor (Mr. Martin) was read by Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, to the effect, that the Hutt Park, as a public recreation ground, was ' exempt from rates. The amendment to the Rating Act, 1913, which exempted air public recreation grounds from rates, was also referred to, and the committee decided to forward this information to the Hutt Council. The committee decided to -visit the grouuds for the purpose of arranging a more pormanent tenure- of the room used by the.Petone Technical School for shearing lessons. - ■ The following wero nominated tor office for the coming term at the quarterly meeting of the.
