THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS PBt GlEncoe,] \ The Spring Meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club will be held on Saturday aud Monday. There is, a weight-for-age event on each day. The rnnners in the Feilding Stakes include the Welcome Stakes winner Battle Eve, and several good performers from the elder division, including Postillion and First Glance. J. H. Prosser leaves for Feilding today with Ai'atiatia, Jem, Goldstream. and Gold', Soult. The "Highden" horseman, A. Oliver, will ride Bertrada, Portraiture, and Kimbombi on the opening day of the Feilding meeting. ' The imported horse Feramorz was very sore after racing at Riccarton.' As ho does not figure in the Auckland entries his owner, probably intends giving him a spell. The grey horse Ruapani is still frequenting the Riccarton track. He has not been asked to perform more than trotting and Entering work since the carnival week, and will probably remain south until after the Dunedin meeting, at which fixture he may be given a race. Though the task jset Reputation of carrying 61b. overweight for age in the Auckland Cup is certainly a formidable one, past results show that it is not beyond the projvess of a really good three-year-old. When Crackshot prevailed in 1890 he had Bst. 31b. in the saddle, whilo on' the occasion of St. Hippo's triumph two years later/ Mr. Nathan's colt carried Bst. 91b., a stone over the weight-for-age scale.

: At Feilding on Tuesday next there will be an auction sale of high-class thoroughbreds, claiming Advance as their sire. Advance was a great performer in his day, and won over all distances, both here Australia. With the limited opportunities at his disposal he has done well at the stud, and left many good winners, including Equitas, a Stewards' Handicap and Champion Plate winner.

The success of Valhalla at Canterbury Park on Saturday last came as a surprise for it is only a short time ago that he' was reported to be very backward in condition, 'and had an enlarged knee.

It is likely that P. M'Grath, a younger brother of M. T. M'Grath, formerly of Masterton, will set up at Trentham as a public . trainer. • One of his charges will be. the colt by the' imported horse The Welkin, recently purchased by Mr. R. Buick, and another will be a two-year-old by Linacre, that will also carry the colours of the Masterton sportsman.

The Sydney trotting trainers, M. Edwards, who brought six horses, and P. Riddle, who had a team of five, did not have a very successful time at the big meeting at Addington. Only two races fell to them, though in several other events their charges finished in the money.

If it was certain that Reputation would see the post for the Auckland Cup Mr. W. E. Bidwell's black colt would have a host of supporters. However, as the valuable Islington Plate, the Great Northern Derby, and the Auckland-Plate all come on for decision after the Cup, Mr. Bidwell may decide to allow the colt to forgo, his engagement.in the two-mile race.

With the present high prices ruling for feed, trainers are finding it difficult to make both ends meet, and it is quite likely that an advance in fees will shortly take place. One trainer,'in discussing the matter last week, mentioned that he had just bought a lino of oats at 3s. Id. per bushel, and this was the highest price he had ever paid. Chaff was at .£6 per ton, and hay was practically-unpro-curable. Boys' have to get 15s: and .£1 per week and after their food- is paid for there is very little left out of. 15s. per week, which is the ruling fee per horse. : TROTTING CLUB BOYCOTT. ■ DISQUALIFICATION OP MEMBERS. • (Br IW«grepli.—Frees Association.) Auckland, November 23. As a result Of the inquiry, bv the Auckland Trotting Club in. regard to the, action of certain members-of the Northern Owners', Trainers', and Breeders' Association and the attempted boycott of the club's spring meeting, Dr. , Brookway (president) and Messrs.
