; THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL ANNUAL' MEETING The annual general meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Asso-. ciation was held, last night,' Sir. A. Marryatt .presiding. There were also present Messrs. E. L. Chaffey, M'. B. Guise, A. Davies, C. E. Bridge, W. F. Larkin, and J. C. Cusaok (hon. sec.). The annual report and the balance-sheet were adopted. The report stated that during the past year increased interest had been taken in amateur athletics, and the sport had made great strides 1 in the Dominion. "It is a matter of extreme gratification to the council," continued the report, "that in the great conflict in which-our Empire is at present engaged so many, athletes are at present on.active service. . . . The'absence
of our fellow athletes on the King's service should make us the more diligent ill keeping the sport at its usual nigh level. The hopes that the funds from sports meetings during the coming year .-will, wherever possible, be devoted to entirely patriotic purposes." In a lengthy reference to the American tour, the report-, expressed th opinion that it would prove of inestimable value in the development of amateur athletics in the Dominion, while : the lectures delivered by Mr. E. M. Peixotto (manager of , the team) were of absorbing interest and greatly appreciated. Tliere was a net loss on the tour of £60 Is. lid., and a loss .on. the lectures of £17 155.,,7 d. . The Council had also to face the expense of sending a team to the. Australasian Championships in Melbourne, .the cost of this being £122 10s. 6d. The expenditure for the year exceeds the revenue' by £218 os. 3d., but the balance-sheet showed that.the assets -were £2 ss. in-excess of the liabilities. A feature of tie year's .work was the holding of the military championships, the success, of the enterprise exceeding all expectations. The military- authorities hav* expressed a wish' that -this meeting should become an- annual fixture, and the • Council is taking - steps to give effect to this desire.
In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman reviewed- the matters contained therein, and also referred to the proposal to institute intercollegiate championships. He felt sure that the majority of . headmasters throughout the Dominion would support, such a scheme. , Election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr... J. H. It was decided that the , New Zealand Championships should .be held in Auckland on a date to be fixed by the Centre. ' .i
A sub-committee' to consider the question of holding a military championship meeting during the season was appointed as follows: Messrs. M. Burnett, ,B. A;, Guise, and the. secretary and the treasurer. :
To consider matters in .connection with the proposed inter-collegiate championships, ~ a sub-committee .was appointed consisting of Messrs. C. E. Bridge, E. L. Chaffey, and A. Marryatt.
