CITY CRICKET
EASY VICTORIES WINS FOR NORTH & CENTRAL FINE FIRST WICKET STAND. City, cricket was less bright and less interesting than usual on Saturday. North and Central won their matches far too easily to make the finishes exciting, and, with few exceptions, there . was not a | great deal of life in, the play. Central defeated East by ten wickets, and North vanquished Old Boys by nine wickets. Tho feature of the afternoon's play was the partnership of S. Hickson and D. Naughton' for Central. On the opening day's play East led by 39 runs, and they seotued likely to secure a first innings victory. However, in their second venture, they failed to survive the attack of Robinson, tho fast bowlor, who, slightly aided by the wind, took six wickets far 22 runs. T.ho East batsmen registered five "ducks," and Midlane and' Baker were in the quintette. Having rattled East out for 85, Central sent Hickson and Naughton in c to wipo out the deficit of 124, and win. This was accomplished without tho loss of a. wicket— Hickson 59, Naughton 58., Except in the early stages of the partnership, the pair had the bowling mastered all the way. Those two batsmen have a great record. for first-wicket 6tands—perhaps greater than any other two batsmen in Wellington cricket. Last season they put up a large number of fine partnerships. Although easily defeated by North, Old Boys put up a very creditable performance in their second innings. " Hales infused some life into his batting, and his 49 included a couple of good sixers. Petone defeated University by 6 wickets and 3 runs at Petone. For the local club, Cate (44)' put up the highest score, and for University, Dickson 27 (not out) was tho best batsmen. Following are tho scores:—
