• .WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. Last week's play in the Wellington South Chess Club's annual handicap tournament settled possession of the two leading prizes, 'i'he long game between Messrs. Loney and Weine resulted in a draw at the third sitting. Bach player.had a rook and four pawns, and neither could afford to "abandon his trenches" in the hope of scoring a win. The result is that Mr. Perrott wins the first prize—a handsome, "iii-statu-quo" set of chessmen presented by the president, Mr. B. B. Allen. Mr. Perrott, whose tally in the finals is four wins and one draw, received a number of congratulations on 'his well-deserved success. He'has played steadily through-' out and his win is a very popular one quite apart'from the fact that he has rendered; the club most valuable service as its hon. secretary for the past two years. The second, prize was won by Mr. G. H. Loney, a former hoii. seoretary, with a-tally of four points, i.e., only half a point .behirid Mr. Perrott. He, too,' has been in: fine form. Messrs. Purchas and Weine have each scored two points, but the latter has yet to play Mr. Berry, consequently the destination of the third prize is at present in suspense. -~.,.'
■ A,committee meeting has been convened for- next Friday evening to consider the question of nominating «a competitor ; for the championship congress which commences'in Christchurch on or about-December-26, and also .to voice the club's opinion on the question of whether or not a book of the congress should be issued. WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB. ' • A' committee meeting of the Wellington Chess Cliib was held in the Y.M.C.A. Buildings on Saturday evening, Mr. W. F. Barraud (president) occupying the chair. There were also present: Mossrs. Fell, Barnes, Bock, White, Tanner, Kelling, and W. Cowpor Hill (lion, secretary).
It was unanimously decided to grant the application.o£ the club newly formed at the local' University College for the loan-of material. Tho lion, secretary was instructed to procure a new notice-board and "ladder." Messrs. A. Varnoy and J. Courtney Greer were elected to active membership.
In:response to a circular memorandum' received from the New Zealand Chess Association it was decided to reply that the club would be very sorry 'to'se'e'a';break'in the "NewZealandßecorda,'' that the issue of Congress books should be continued if possible, and that the club would take 20 copies of the book in any form, though naturally preferring a book with something more in it than a mere record of the games played at the Christchurch Congress.
In connection with the New, Zealand Chess Association's 'reminder that' en-tries-for the Dominion Championship close on December 12, • it was unanimously decided to nominate Messrs. Cowner, Hill, and H. A. Mackenzie as the club's competitors, theplayots who stand above them an the ladder.not being 'available. Both these "colts" have given a lot of useful study to the game, and are expected to make a very creditable first appearance." The decision of the present champion, Mr. W. E. Mason, not to take part, will be widely regretted.
The hon. secretary was authorised to lend the club's. clocks to the New Zealand Chess _ Association for the purpose of the Christchurch Congress. ■
