According to the special correspondent of the "Press" in Gisborne, the prolonged whistling that issued from the direction of the bay about 9.20 on Thursday evening caused some anxiety. It proved to be the New Zealand Shipping Company's 8.5. liakaia calling for a pilot. Captain Beaton, the harbourmaster, went off in the board's launch, and was informed by Captain Smith that he had touched the mud at the end of the reef that rune out east of whore the wreck of the Star of Canada now lies. It appears that the vessel, which was ljing at her anchorage outeide the buoy off Pa Hill, had completed loading, and with her • anchor up was ready to leave for Tokomoru Bay. There was practically no wind, but the sea running in the bay caused the vessel's head to swing away until it was pointing shorewards in a north-oastcrly direction. While endeavouring to get the vessel's head shaped for the sea, the swell carried her close to the shore, and as the steamer swung on to her course, her port quarter grazed the mud at tho end of the reef running out a short distance from tho wreck of the Star of Canada. Captain Smith anchored in tho middle of tho bay, and after waiting about en hour, and a half it was ascertained that no water was being made. Accordingly the local agent (Mr. R. G. Hallainore) ordered tho vessel on to Tokomaru Bay, where cargo was worked, and from where tho 6teamer proceeded to Auckland. . ' THE SYDNEY BOAT.
