RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

NEW ZEALAND CANDIDATES. The selection of the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar for 1914 will be made on December 12. The candidates are:— Wellington.—Mr. Frederick Temple Clere, LL.B. ' Canterbury.—Mr, Henry Stokes Eichards. Otago.—Mr. John P. Hewat. Auckland—Mr; Frederick A. Airey. The Selection Committee, which will consist of His Excellency the Governor (chairman), Sir Eobert Stout (Chancellor and Chief Justice), Mr. Justice Denniston, and four Professors (one from each Professorial Board in the Dominion), will meet at Govonvment House at 10 o'clock on the morning of December 12, and examine the candidates preparatory to making their selection. Mr. Clere, -ho Wellington candidate, is the second son of Mr. F. de J. Clere, the well-known architect of Wellington, and was bom in this city twenty-three years ago.. He was educated at the Hutt School and the Wanganui Collegiate School, .md afterwards entered the office of Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett, Tripp, and Blair, on whoso' staff he was at the outbreak of the war. He volunteered for service with the Samoan Expedition, and is now on active service at' Apia. Last Easter he was admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supremo Court of New Zealand.
