Professor Reiss, of Lausanne University, has concluded an inquiry into the 'Austrian atrocities in Servia. He states that the Austrians massacred four thousand unarmed peasants in tho Shabatz district, including women. The majority were taken as hostages, but as it was impossible to send them to Austroia immediately they were hanged and shot. The Auetrians forced 109 hostages' at Lesnitza to dig their own graves, and though-many were only wounded, the firing party immediately filled in the graves, burying many alive. . . , '•■ Professor-Reiss visited l other villages where 1148 oivilians were killed and .2280 disappeared. ;■-,,-, The Viennese Press justify, the massacres, stating that the Servian population is always revolting.
