In the Federal Senate, during the de« bate on the Defence Bill, Senator Tur-' ley. moved an amendment for the restoration of "Vet" canteens. Ho> pointed out that the Belgians were the biggest, and the British the nest biggest liquor consumers in tho world. Becont events had demonstrated that their soldiora were not Wasters. ■Senator I'earco (Defence Minister) said that he did.not intend to accept the amendment. For many years he had advocated "wet" conteens,- but practical oxperience of military camps had entirely changed his views. "Wet" canteens were a danger and in ovil. "Let's remove the danger and the temptation from the path of our soldiers, and give them an.opportunity of bringing the greatest credit to Australia and to themselves in their grim task in the bloodiest war in history," he said. ■
