BELGIAN RELIEF FUND
BROUGHAM HILL CLUB'S TENNIS TOURNAMENT. '
A ladies' tennis tournament in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund was held on tli'u Brougham Hill Tennis Club's courts yesterday afternoon, and proved- very successful. The tournament was promoted ity Miss Travers, in conjunction with Mr. Jl A. B. Howe, and when Miss Tracers was called away from tho city some ■ dayj ago her place in the management of the fixture was taken by Miss Williams. Yesterday's oeautilul ■ weather resulted in a capital attendance at tho tournament, and no fewer than thirty-six ladies competed, a total of 3UI games being played L-e----foro the scoreo were made up. Misfcs Archer, Martell. and M'Lean wore then found to be leaning with 24 points, and in the play off Mis Archer proved the winner. -■
Mr. W. E. Howe, secretary of the Brougham Hill Cfub, subsequently announced that the profits from the tournament' had already reached the sum of £4 175., and would be still further augmented. For tho success of the veil turo credit was due to Miss I. Stevens for collecting sufficient money to pay .or the balls used in the 324 games played; to Messrs.'J. Godber and Co. for providing afternoon tea free of cost; and to Mrs. Burton, Mrs s Morris, Miss Yar-. rail, and Mr. S. Roberts for assisting in other directions. . .
Mr. J. A. B Howe's trophy for the winner was then presented to Miss Archer. When entries for. the tournamont were called the prize had oeen described as :t packet of hairpins covered with glasj. It proved to be a silyir- mounted glass vase, containing the packet referred to. Miss Ward 20 Miss Jenkins 19, Jliss Howe 19, Mrs. J. A. B. Howe 19, Mrs. Go'.die 18, Miss Yarrall IS, Miss Jones 17, Miss Plimmer 17,, Miss .Castle 16, Miss Price 16, Miss E. Fossetto 16, Miss M. Fossette 16, Miss Callender 16, Mrs. Grady 16, Miss Anderson 15, Miss Baxter 15, Miss Veitcli 14, Miss Martin 13, Miss E. Stevens 13, Mra. Wagg 13, Miss Henderson 12, Mrs. Middleton 10, Miss Couzens 9. In tho semi-final, Miss Archer defeated Miss Mantell, 3—2, and in the final defeated Miss M'Lcan 3—o, both matches providing a good deal of excitement.
