HEATING THE HOSPITAL

'A NEW SCHEME PROPOSED. At yesterday's meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board the Consulting Engineer (Mr. J. H. Anderson) reported on heating proposals for the Hospital buildings.. He said that in order to obtain authentic information on the vacuum system of heating ho delayed the report till he had had an opportunity of inspecting the heating system at the' Christcliuirch Hospital. He was able to do so lecently and now submit full particulars. Tlio heating was effected by low-pressure steam installed on the Atmospherio Company's Vacuum system, which was very extensively used in large hospitals and other public buildings both in America 3nd Great Britain. The installation in Christchurch was. the only one ill New Zealand and the experience of the Hospital authorities there of the results of the working of the system had been exceedingly satisfactory, resulting in marvellous economy. After explaining the system the engjneer said that it was impossible to give an accurate estimate of the'cost at the present stngo,_ or until complete plans of the buildings had been prepared, so that prpvisional allowance only could be made, so far as it applied to boiler extension, heating oF buildings, hot water Bervice, kitchen extension, rearranging refrigerator plant, etc. Tlio.following estimate might bo near enough to allow provisionally for the works:—New boiler connections and alterations to boiler house and providing new bunker, £1000; installing electrio motor (including direct current, cables) and moving and re-erecting refrigerator, condenser, and ice tank, etc., £180 : now steam service to kitchen and remodelling hot water service, £100; workshop tools, lathe, pipe machine, drill; shaftor, installation of motor, etc., £230; complete heating system for the Main Hospital, including radiators, pipes, valves, pumps, etc., etc., £1000. .

'Hie recommendations wcro adopted without discussion.
