WANGANUr A & P. SHOW
CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS. (By Our Special Reporter.) Wanganul, November 18. The Wa-nganui Agricultural Association's annual show was opened)-to-day when, though the sky was clear and ;the sun-'shone brightly, a stiff westerly gale made matters the reverse of.'pleasant. This had a decided effect on tile attendance, which was considrably below ■ the , usual first-day' average, though probably the war also exercised some'little influence in this'direction, it certainly Bad no inconsiderable effect on the entries. The general unaettle"ient by the large purchase of horses for remounts and the transfer of a considerable amount of farm labour ~to military life, thereby causing the average exhibitor to give more attention to the ordinary farm work instead of preparing stock for. show purposes, all contributed to a lesser number of exhibits: than in normal years.-. Not only
was-this falling off evident in the «tcckt, classes,' but was .also reflected, iu other departments of the, show, such as home industries and school compe-
titions.) .The one. exception was the dog •seotion'-iin which'"the .association and the Wanganui" Kennel Club act in conjunctionJ This, one of the principal glories of the Wanganui show, was this year bigger than ever, the number 'of entries being '1165, or 131 more than last year's, total; It is satisfactory, .'to add, howeverj : that no falling away was observable; in the quality of the exhibits in the ■■various classes.
. For purposes of comparison the entries, or last; year, and (/his are given herewith, 'the figures for 1913 'being ehown; in parentheses:—Horses, including competitions, 394 (461); cattle, 173 (238); sheep,- 204 (377); dogs, 1165 (1031); home industries, 609 (763); schools; 263 (248); 'produce,: 53 (58); wool, 8 (30); photography, 45 (nil); total, .2914.(3238). , /■ Of horses there was a fine display in 'all classes' notwithstanding the lesser entry idue to, the district, having been drained; of > a good number for war purposes,' and as usual they were shown in a condition which left little t9 be_ desired. There are,' Strangely, considering the district's horse record in the past, very few blood horees shown and the principal classes in these are not judged till ,the second day. Light horses were, however, a big feature, and all were quite up to. standard in every respect, similar remarks applying to the. pony classes. Hunters were ,as usual a etrong class and gave some splendid.exhibitions'in ■ the leaping events. . Cattle attracted a great deal of attention from the critics, but while the judges certainly had no easy task in deciding their appeals the competition so far as , the, number of exhibitors.is concerned was, except for Jersey classes, disappointingly limited. Mr. \Y. H. Caines, whose Ayrshires are a splendid stamp, had matters almost all his own way in these classes, though he failed to secure the ohampionship for bulls, which was taken by J. ll.'Farlane and J. Cameron (reserve). Fred Moore took four.out of five firsts in Polled Angus; C. 6. Russell gaining first, for two-year heifers-with a nice animal. In Herefords G. F. Mood took first and second for yearling heifer, but B. Short was the most successful exhibitor of the big cattle, winning in every other class, besides getting several seconde. 'W. 1. Lovelock and J. Donald, had practically a monopoly of the prizes in Holsteins, honours being fairly evenly divided between them. In Shorthorns G. A. Turner scooped in all Hie first prizes, the only other entries being: from Moore Bros., who were awarded several seconds.: Jerseys were a very fine lot of animals, and in these the bulk of the first-prizes foil fairly, evenly between R. J. linn and P.. J. I'aterson, other names in the prke-list being J. M. Shotter and P. Hunter. U..C. B. Harper carried off all but one of ''the firsts for Jereeys not eligible for the Herd Book. There were some 'grand' exhibits in the fat stock classes, m which H. Middleton took five firsts, H. K. M'Konzie and J. P. Lillips two each, and G. M'Gregor and F. G. Moore ono each.
Tho same state of limited competition was apparent in both the stud aid flock sheep classes, in. wMch, however, no one competitor could claim any outstanding superiority, and in consequence prizes wero fairly evenly divided. Tho fat sheep classes drew a much better entry, some of them very well filled indeed, and it would be hard to find anything better than the splendid showing made by all the competitors, the judge, remarking of iome of them that he had never "clapped eyes" on a bettor lot. The championship awards were as follow:—Horses—Draughts: Mrs. J. D. Ormond's Moto Glon, champion. Oattte —E. Short in Hereford's, and \V. I. Lovelock and J. Donald in Holstoins swept the board. . Hereford: Champion bull,.E. Short's Eaton.Onk. Cow: E. Short's Happy Rosa. Holeteins: Champion bull, W. I. Lovelock's King of Dominoes; reserve champion, J. Donald's Paul Pietertje. Champion cow: J. Donald's Nctherland Paulino; reserve, W. I. Lovelock's Colaiitha Lass. Ayrsliires—Champion • bull: Jnincs M'Farlane's Lord Glenliam; reserve, John Cameron's Lochio! Joker. Coiv: W. H. Cniue's Bright, Smilti; reserve, W. H. Caine's Favourite. In Lincoln sliecp Mrs. Ji D. Ormond.took tho championships for ram and ewo and lamb. . Border Leicester, ram; G. V.
