THE BATTLE OFF THE CHILIAN COAST CRUISER GLASGOW ARRIVES AT VALPARAISO London, November 17. The Central Nows Agency's Rio do Janeiro correspondent states 'that the cruiser Glasgow (which took part in the recent sea fight off Valparaiso, when the British cruisers Good Hope and Moninouth wore sunk) has arrived at Valparaiso. ■■'■•' . (Ree. November 18, 11.25 p.m.)' • London, November 18. The Press Bureau statestbat the captain of H.M.S. Glasgow reports that the discipline on board during tho fight was the same as at battle practico. The Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and a email cruiser found the range : of the Good Hope, Morimouth, and Qtranto, which were silhouetted against' flie sunset, and hampered by a heavy head sea. The third salvo caused a (fire on the Mbnmouth, and the next «*ah"!immense explosion on the Good Hope, the flames from which were two hundred feet high. The Glasgow was unable , -to. succour the survivors, and escaped at full speed.
When the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau wore first seen the Good Hope wirelessed the Canopus: "Am going i/a attack the enemy"—then 15,000 yards distant. "We had the advantage of the light, but were out-ranged. After , suneet the failing light made, it difficult to see the enemy. ■ At seven o'clock they opened fire at 12,000 yards. The Good Hope, Monmouth, and Glasgow replied. The Good 'Hope and Monmouth were both afire. The explosion on the Good Hope.occurred at 7.30 p.m., resulting in her total destruction." Both sides continued firing. The Monmouth was badly down at the bow : and turned seawards. The Glasgow signalled 'the Monmouth: "The enemy is following us," but received no reply, and as she was unable to render assistance .she steamed full-speed to avoid destruction. "At 9.30 p.m. we observed 75 flashes, doubtless .the final attack on the Monmouth. The conduct of the officers and men was admirable through a most trying time. It was hard to receive a great volume of firo without the ohance of adequately returning it." j SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS. • Santiago, November 17. Melbourne, November 18. Captain Glossop, commander ofH.M.A.S. Sydney, has communicated details of his fight with the Emden. "The enemy hove in sight at 9.25, and the first shot was firod.at 9.40. "The Emden fired a shot at a range of 10,000 yards, and the shooting was excellent considering that the distance was outside her range. Her firing failed .when the Sydney began hitting her. "The Emden's rudder was quickly disabled, and she suffered a great loss of speed owing to her funnel and foremast, and then the second and third funnels,. being shot away. Mr. Bucknall, an officer on the eteamer Kabinga, relates that when that vessel was captured by the- Emden, the lattor's commander (Mueller) learnt that the Kabinga captain's • wife and children -were on board.
