Richardson came out ito New Zealand originally as an artillery instructor, with'the rank of mastergunner; was subsequently given com.missioned'rank, and joined the instructional staff, being for some time ActingDirector'of Artillery prior to the ar-rival-of Major. H. F. Head, whose, appointment terminated with the introduction of the now regime. Shortly after the arrival of Major G. N. Johnston arid Captain Maidlaw as Director of Ordnance and Assistant-Director of Artillery, respectively,. (ranking locally as lientenant-colonel arid major), Captain Richardson (later, promoted to . his majority) left New Zealand for acourse at.the.Cainberlev Staff College; England,' and subsequently succeeded Colonel A.
